Have you ever been curious about connecting with your spirit animal?

From symbols of strength and courage to messages about personal growth, connecting with your spirit animal is a powerful tool for spiritual exploration and reflection.

While “spirit animal” is a relatively modern term, its concept is one that has been around for thousands of years. Spiritual animal medicine or spirit animals are a source of support and inner healing. Believed to be a person’s teacher and protector through the cycle of life, they are here to help you navigate the ups and downs of life on Earth as you learn to discover and embrace your inner power.

According to ancient wisdom, each of us has a spirit animal that serves as an ally and guide throughout our lives. If you’re unfamiliar with the concept of spirit animals or want to learn more about how to connect with yours, then read on!

Understand Your Animal’s Habitat & Behaviour

If you’re looking to connect with your spirit animal, it’s important to understand its habitat and behavior. Understanding the physical features, personality, and natural environment of the creature can help you learn its message and medicine.

This is often one of the first steps in gaining deeper insight into your spirit animal. Many animals have a set of traits or characteristics that are associated with them due to their way of life (for example, lions are associated with strength, wolves with perseverance, and owls with wisdom).

By observing where your animal lives and how it acts, you can begin to learn more about its personality and how that might fit with yours.

Consider Your Own Connections

So, what does this look like in practice?

Let’s say you’re interested in connecting with a wolf. You can start by learning about where they live—do they live in the mountains or do they prefer the forest? Then, think about how they behave—do they hunt alone or in packs? Are they territorial?

Once you’ve answered these questions, try to draw parallels between yourself and your animal—do both of you enjoy being alone or would you rather be part of a group?

Once you’ve identified some qualities that resonate with your animal spirit, consider where else in your life those qualities might show up. Are there areas where these qualities are lacking? Are there areas where they’re already strong?

Wherever those answers take you will help guide you toward understanding how best to use those traits to connect with your spirit animal.

Analyze Your Animal’s Symbolic Meanings

Aside from learning about the natural habitat and behaviors of your animal, another way to connect with your spirit animal’s presence in your life is to take a look at the different spiritual and cultural meanings connected to it.

All spirit animals have their own unique stories, teachings, and wisdom that can be used for personal development and growth. Research your spirit animal’s traditional and mythical characteristics so you can better understand its messages!

The Archetype of Your Spirit Animal

Along the same vein of getting to know the symbolism of your spirit animal, it’s also helpful to identify the archetype your animal embodies, too. This can be done by simply analyzing the traits and characteristics associated with that particular spirit animal together with its ancient symbolism.

Look for an empowering relationship between your inner self and the psyche and archetype of your animal. By doing this, you will recognize feelings, abilities, and values that will lead to a greater understanding of yourself.

In general, there are nine different archetypes for spiritual animals: the healer, the nurturer, the trickster, the leader, the healer, the guide, the warrior, the sage, and the seeker. Which of these archetypes do you feel resonates with your spirit animal?

As Always, Use Your Intuition

To truly make the most of the messages from your spirit animals, you must use your intuition when understanding them- this means looking inwards and being mindful of how your spirit animal makes you feel inside.

Does it bring a feeling of joy or peace? Or maybe even fear or sadness? Listen to what feelings come up within yourself and apply those meanings on a deeper level with your connection with the animal’s message for you.

Also, start paying attention to your dreams. Your dreams are full of symbols that represent aspects of yourself and your life, so take them seriously! Sometimes spirit animals (and spirit guides in general) can use dreams to communicate with you. The next time you wake up from a dream and remember it clearly, write down everything you can remember about it and see if anything in the dream connects back to your spirit animal.

Create a Ritual

If it feels right for you, build your own ritual around your spirit animal(s). This could include anything from burning incense in honor of the animal guide(s) who are with you today, crafting an altar or sacred space dedicated specifically for connecting with them, creating art of them, etc.

There are many ways to build a ritual around your spirit animal. You can choose the level of complexity that feels right for you, whether it’s simple or elaborate. A physical ritual might be something like dancing or singing; an emotional one could be writing a song in honor of your animal; and a mental one might involve meditating on its teachings.

Rituals can also serve as reminders that there is more than what we see with our eyes; they help us connect with the unseen world around us and celebrate our connection with nature, animals and people alike!

Get a Totem or a Picture of Your Spirit Animal

There are many ways to connect with your spirit animals, and one of the best is getting a totem or a picture of them.

A totem is an object that you find or create that represents your spirit animal. Many people opt for traditional miniature animal statues made from wood, stone, or crystal, but a totem could be anything from a painting to a piece of jewelry or even a stuffed animal.

The idea is that when you look at this totem, it will remind you of who you are and help bring out the best parts of yourself. If getting an actual physical object isn’t your style, you can also try creating your own Pinterest board or Tumblr blog filled with photos that you associate with your spirit animal!

Meditate!

One of the easiest ways to connect with your spirit animal is through meditation. Take some time out of your day when you’re not busy and just sit down in a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed by anything or anyone else. Close your eyes, breathe deeply, and focus on nothing but your breathing for several minutes—or as long as it takes for you to feel relaxed enough for this exercise.

Once you feel calm, begin thinking about what your spirit animal or kind of animal might represent who you are inside. Don’t think too hard about this—just let yourself go with whatever comes naturally!

After some time has passed (about 15 minutes), open your eyes again and write down everything that came into mind when thinking about these questions: what kind of animal best represents my true self? What animal am I drawn to right now and why?

Journal to Tap Into Your Subconscious

Last but not least, journaling is a powerful way to connect with your spirit animal.

When you journal, you are tapping into your subconscious mind, which is where all of your inner wisdom lives. By writing down your thoughts and feelings in the moment, you are giving yourself permission to think freely and deeply about what’s going on in your life. This can help you make connections that might not have occurred to you otherwise.

Some questions to ponder…

  1. Why do I feel connected to this particular animal?
  2. What was life like when this animal came to me? When/how did I find my spirit animal?
  3. What traits and characteristics does this animal possess that I have within myself?
  4. What traits and characteristics does this animal express that I currently do not?
  5. What gifts, lessons, or inspirations does this animal offer me?

When you begin to explore and discover possible answers, it might just give you a better understanding of what your spirit animal’s purpose is in your life.

Conclusion

As you get to know your spirit animal, the more you will be able to connect with it. You can learn about its personality and what it says about who you are as a person. Spirit animals are a great way for people of all ages to understand themselves and others around them better.

Keep in mind that while there are many ways to connect with your spirit animal—and there are many different opinions on which way is best—there’s no right or wrong way. You can choose any method that feels right for you and that helps you feel at peace with yourself.

We hope you’ve enjoyed learning about your spirit animal and how to connect with it! To learn more, check out the meanings of common spirit animal omens and different spirit animals here!

Animal omens have been an important part of many cultures across the earth for centuries.

When an animal delivers an omen to you, it is believed that the animal is a messenger from the spirit world. A particular animal might appear at a time when you need guidance or confirmation, or it could show up to warn you of danger ahead.

Oftentimes, animal omens are based on how animals live and behave in nature. Their environments, habits, and natural instincts can give us clues about their meanings. For instance, seeing a scorpion may be a sign that you’re going to go through a transformative time soon but you will have the strength to get through it. You can usually identify a warning from an animal if they seem to act abnormally or if they’re seen doing things they wouldn’t normally do. For example, if a cat washes its face before eating or if a dog howls at the moon, those could be considered signs that something unfavorable may happen soon.

Sometimes animal omens can come from your animal spirit guides (aka spirit animals), “who appear when we need love, strength, support, inspiration, and guidance”, according to Shamanic Practitioner Bernadette King. Animal omens and spirit animals differ from Totem Animals (who you ‘are’) and Power Animals (spiritual energy you can invoke). In this post, we’ll be covering animal omens.

When animals show up on your journey, these omens may offer divine guidance and lessons and can provide deep insights into our lives. Read on to learn more about the ancient symbolism behind eleven common animal omens and what they might mean for you on your path!

Owl Animal Omen

Owl: Wisdom & Intuition

Owl omens draw on the wisdom of our ancestors and they can be used to help us understand the meaning of a situation or to give us insight into the future.

Owls are often associated with wisdom, knowledge, and magic. Owls are also considered to be messengers from the spirit world, as they can see things that other animals cannot. Owl omens can represent spiritual awakening, intuition, insight into the dark side of life, or even death (metaphorically or literally). In some cultures, including many Indigenous American tribes, they are seen as symbols of bad luck, disease, or dying (for example, an owl hooting at night is considered to be an omen of looming death).

However, owls have also been associated with good fortune in some cultures such as ancient Greece, where owls were believed to bring good luck if kept in the home. They are also often associated with witches and wizards in folklore, as well as with goddesses like Artemis, Athena, and Minerva. More generally, the owl is often associated with sage advice and has a long history of representing wisdom, intelligence, and intuition in cultures around the world.

Owl omens can be interpreted in many different ways depending on what it means to you. For example, if you are having trouble sleeping or if you have insomnia, then seeing or hearing an owl may indicate that you should take some time out for yourself and relax for a while. Seeing an owl in your dream or waking life can signify that you need to act on your inner guidance and trust your instinctive wisdom as it could help guide you to better outcomes. If you are going through a rough patch in your life, especially if you’ve been feeling lonely, then seeing an owl may mean that things will get better soon – for now, trust in yourself and the universe to guide you.

Deer: Gentleness, Alertness, & Swiftness

Deer are often associated with beauty, intuition, grace, gentleness, and alertness. As an omen, they can symbolize the need to stay sharp and be on alert for potential changes in your life. They also represent swiftness and decisiveness. Seeing a deer might suggest that you need to make a quick decision in the near future.

In many cultures, it is also associated with wisdom, and in some cases, even luck. The deer is a symbol of God’s creation, and its elegance and gentleness are traits that many humans can aspire to have. The deer is also an ancient symbol of feminine energy, which means that it’s often associated with the moon or cycles in our lives. This can be seen in many cultures around the world, where the deer is linked to fertility rituals and other celebrations of women’s power.

Seeing a deer can be a positive omen of the birthing of new beginnings and standing nobly in one’s own power; it may also be an indication that you will soon be blessed with good news about your love life or children. Deer are also associated with creativity due to their ability to jump over obstacles without any difficulty or effort. If there are no obstacles in your path, seeing a deer suggests that you should take advantage of opportunities while they’re still available so that you can increase your chances of success later on down the road. However, if you are met with any challenges, Deer encourages you that you can get through them with poise and ease.

Deer omens come in many different forms. Like most animal omens, some people see them as an omen of bad luck or danger, while others them as a sign of something good coming their way, such as a fresh start or increasing wealth.

Rabbit: Fear and Nervousness

The rabbit is considered by most to be an extremely lucky animal. Rabbits are an omen of fertility, life, abundance, and renewal. They also represent the feminine principle and love. The rabbit frequently brings news of happiness and success.

In Western culture, rabbits are often seen as symbols of fertility because they have large litters of offspring at one time. Because they give birth so rapidly, they have been associated with fast solutions to problems and a quick wit.

To the Chinese, rabbits are seen as having special powers over wealth and good fortune because they have been known to dig up precious metals such as silver or gold while they were burrowing underground. In Greek mythos, the rabbit is said to be blessed with “the gift of Aphrodite” due to its abundant procreative abilities. Rabbits are also believed to be sacred to Eros and can be an omen of insatiable desire, love, and romance. It can represent a person in your life who is creative, intuitive, gentle, and amorous.

As a warning, the rabbit can sometimes be an omen of fear and nervousness, representing avoidance in certain situations. In ancient myths, the rabbit was seen as an agent of deceit or temptation because of its ability to camouflage itself from predators. In Indian folklore, there is a story about how the god Vishnu took on the form of a rabbit to hide from an evil demon who wanted to eat him. This symbolism still carries over today – rabbits often represent a fear of facing an unknown future, representing feelings that are preventing growth and development. Seeing a rabbit might be telling you to confront your inner worries in order to move forward with confidence.

Fox: Cunningness

Foxes are one of the most mysterious animals in the world. Cunning and wise, these animals can be both gentle and fierce. The fox is a powerful symbol of intelligence and craftiness. In some ancient cultures, the fox was considered to be a creature of prophecy – capable of predicting certain events and guiding people through difficult times. They were seen as messengers of the gods or spirits with the ability to cross between the spirit world and our world. Associated with magic, witchcraft, and healing, they are also believed by many to be able to telepathically communicate with animals and humans alike.

Seeing a fox is a positive sign that you are growing in wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. Sometimes, foxes can appear as a warning against someone who is cunning or sly, so beware (especially if you dream of being chased by a fox!).

As an omen, the fox may indicate that you are dealing with a situation where you need to be shrewd in order to succeed, or that you have come across an opportunity that requires strategic and creative thinking. You may need to “keep your cards to your chest” so to speak, and be mindful of what you share with others and who you share with. Sometimes, the fox can come as a warning to suggest that everything is not as it appears – deceit (whether intentional or unintentional) may be at play. Beware of any trickery or illusion in your life. You or someone else may be hiding their true intentions behind a mask of innocence.

Cat: Curiosity, Independence, and Magic

A cat is a creature of mystery. Their independence, their aloofness, and their inherent ability to be both loving and vicious at the same time make them mysterious.

Cats are often believed to be omens of protection. To the ancients, they were often seen as spiritual guardians or protectors who can bring their owners good fortune and prosperity. The Egyptians believed cats were sacred animals, closely associated with the goddess Bastet or Pasht. She was a lunar goddess of fertility who sometimes took on the form of a cat or lioness. Cats were mummified in the same way as humans and even buried with their owners in the hope that they would provide protection for them in the afterlife.

Many cultures believe that cats have psychic abilities such as clairvoyance (seeing into the future), precognition (seeing events before they happen), or even telepathy (reading minds). They can see ghosts and multi-dimensional beings that our eyes can’t, and they are thought to guard us against (or help us connect to) these entities. So when a cat appears to you as an omen, it often indicates that you need to trust in your own intuition when making important decisions. Pay close attention to the current situation, and take notice of any subtle messages which could be guiding you toward a particular outcome. You may also need to protect yourself energetically.

Although not entirely solitary animals, cats are highly independent and autonomous. Seeing a cat can be a sign to embrace your independence and be more authentic when dealing with others. If you have issues with people-pleasing or co-dependency, the cat is an omen to start living your life on your own terms – do what YOU want, not what everyone else wants!

Less commonly, cats can show up as “negative” omens or warnings of evil energy and bad luck including disaster, disease, and poverty. Black cats in particular are often perceived to be bad omens around the world due to their association with witchcraft (black cats were once believed to be witches in feline form), however, others believe them to be symbols of agility, power, and security.

Bear: Strength & Protection

The bear is a very common animal omen that is seen in a variety of cultures. The bear is known for its strength, endurance, and tenacity. It represents the ability to protect oneself and others from harm. The bear is a protector spirit, like the wolf and dog. It is wise enough to know when it needs help and strong enough to accept it when it does come along.

The bear symbolizes strength and power, which are two characteristics that are highly sought after. Bear animal omens mean that you will have great strength to overcome your problems. It can also mean that you are afraid of facing your fears and that you need to be more courageous; you are more capable than you may realize! It may also be a sign of good luck and prosperity heading your way. The bear is considered to be one of the most auspicious omens in Chinese culture, as it is associated with blessings such as success, fortune, and happiness.

Another omen of the bear is that someone close to you has been healed from illness or disease and is now in good health again. Seeing a bear cub can suggest that something new is coming into your life soon. You may also be having second thoughts about something important regarding either yourself or someone else involved with this situation at this time (someone close to you). The advice of the bear is to protect your boundaries and seek the guidance of someone you trust if you need it.

Sometimes, the bear can come to you as a warning. Warnings about being smothering or over-protective with your loved ones, getting angry too easily or being too aggressive when talking to people or dealing with problems, and even people who might be trying to take advantage of your kindness can all be cautionary omens of the bear.

Raccoon:

Raccoons are intelligent, playful, and curious animals. They are nocturnal and have a very acute sense of smell. They are also opportunistic omnivores who will eat most things, including insects, small mammals, birds, fish, and plants.

While Raccoons are considered to be good luck by some cultures because of their cleverness and ability to survive in difficult conditions, they are also considered to be bad luck by others because they are sometimes destructive when they raid garbage cans or when they attack poultry farms.

Most often, Raccoon animal omens are a sign that you need to be careful of what you are doing. You may find that this animal is trying to warn you about someone in your life who has lied to you or cheated on you. It could be a lover, family member, or friend who has done something negative behind your back. Raccoon is usually a major signal of the need to be more cautious when dealing with people in the workplace or social life – you may have been too trusting and now find yourself in trouble because of it.

The next common meaning of a raccoon omen is that there will be some sort of conflict in your life soon, however, this conflict will be resolved with ease once it happens. If you dream about seeing this animal, then it means that there will be no problems when dealing with this issue at all! You may feel otherwise, but Raccoon can reveal that things are working in your favor, even if it doesn’t appear that way at the moment.

Another less common meaning of a raccoon animal omen is that something favorable will come your way soon – this can be a financial gain or just general good fortune. If you see this animal in your dreams, then it is also said that you will have good luck with money or wealth in some form. If you’ve been working toward these things, Raccoon is a sign that your efforts will be rewarded.

Frog:

Frogs can be found in almost every region of the world and are common in many cultures. They are often associated with fertility, life, prosperity, and good fortune. Frogs are also seen as harbingers of rain and they play an important role in the lives of many different human societies.

Frog omens are generally considered to be very lucky because it is believed that frogs bring prosperity, wealth, and fertility. The frog can produce thousands of eggs at one time while remaining healthy and happy, so ancient Chinese people believed that frogs were good omens and could bring them great fortune if they captured one and kept it in their homes.

This animal is known for its ability to survive in any environment as it can live on land or in water. This is why it is used as a symbol of adaptability, flexibility, and survival skills. Because frogs are able to change their skin when they need to do so, they are believed to have transformative, healing powers too, similar to the Snake. In some cultures, frogs have been revered as gods or have been used in healing rituals and ceremonies.

Generally, frogs are often omens of transformation, new beginnings, and success. When you see frogs, it means that your life is about to change for the better.

Snake Animal Omen

Snake:

Snake is a symbol of transformation, wisdom, and rebirth. Snakes are also considered to be great healers and psychics since they have been associated with the power of the feminine since ancient times, along with other symbols such as the egg, the moon, and water.

In the Bible, snakes represent temptation, evil, and Satan himself. Some cultures view the snake as a negative omen of deception and betrayal, however, to many the snake is a powerful, positive omen of fertility and the birth of something new. They also represent wisdom and esoteric knowledge that comes from deep introspection.

The snake is an animal omen that brings good luck when seen by someone who is pregnant or trying to get pregnant. It can also bring good luck if seen by someone who suffers from chronic pain or illness if they see one slithering across their path or even just crawling around near them, as the snake signals healing.

The snake is an ancient symbol of transformation, rebirth, and renewal. It sheds its skin, symbolizing the ability to shed old habits and move forward. Snakes are a common omen for those who want to let go of something, whether it be a relationship or some other aspect of their life that they feel is holding them back.

A warning from the snake can mean that temptation, greed, and materialism are having a negative effect on your life. Seeing a snake can be a sign that you need to slow down, get rid of things that aren’t useful, or add more balance to your routine. If you see a snake, ask yourself: what area of my life needs attention right now? What needs to change? What parts of myself/my life do I need to let go of?

The most frequent meaning of the snake omen is that you need to transform yourself in order to make progress in your life. Snake often appears when you may be clinging to the past, outdated relationships, or unhealthy habits which are no longer serving you. Snake says to you, release! Shed the old and make room for the new.

Dove:

Doves are an omen of peace, love, and harmony.

Seeing a dove indicates that you should keep your hopes high and not give up on something that you want to achieve. If you’ve been stressed or dealing with a difficult situation lately, a dove can mean that things will begin to resolve soon. Do what you can to restore balance and serenity in your life.

The dove is associated with many different religions and cultures throughout history. In Christianity, it represents the Holy Spirit and purity of heart. In Buddhism, it represents equanimity and serenity. In Hinduism, it represents wisdom, grace, and beauty. The Chinese believed the white doves were messengers between heaven and earth, while Native Americans saw them as messengers from God. Hearing or seeing a dove is sometimes an omen that you or someone close to you will be visited by an angel or spirit guide who will help them find their way back to God or their higher self. Doves can be a sign that your spirit guides or angels are nearby. For many, seeing or hearing a dove is frequently a message of loving support from the Spirit.

Doves are also known as the “morning” bird and have been seen as an omen of good luck, good fortune, and happiness for centuries around the world. If you see a white dove fly across your path or if you dream of seeing doves flying in groups, this signifies prosperity and harmony, especially within the family circle.

The dove is also a symbol of romantic love and devotion due to its association with the Greek goddess Aphrodite. If you have recently had a dove omen, it could be a sign that you will soon have love returned or find someone who can offer you peace in your life. Doves are also a symbol of fidelity, so if you see one, it can confirm that your lover is faithful to you.

Lizard:

Lizards are found all over the world and are believed to be one of the oldest species on Earth. The lizard is seen as a symbol of wisdom because it has been around since the time of dinosaurs – this ancient animal has survived many changes over the years and has seen many things come and go. They have been worshiped by many civilizations in the past, but now they are considered pests in some parts of the world.

Similar to the Snake and the Frog, Lizards are an omen of change. The shedding of their old skins represents rebirth and renewal, which can happen within us when we shed our former selves. Some lizards have the ability to grow their tails back after being completely severed. Seeing a lizard can indicate that you are going through a period of great inner and outer growth. You may have had to cut off certain things in your life recently or handle a lot of pain, and Lizard assures you that you are so strong and your life is changing for the better. Trust in the person you are becoming.

Most lizards are also known for their ability to change their skin color to blend into their surroundings which allows them to hide from predators and become invisible when approaching prey. They can lie in plain sight and blend into their surroundings very easily. Lizards represent camouflage and adaptability, which can help you blend into any situation or environment without being noticed by others.

Associated with the Sun, which is a source of light, warmth, and energy, the lizard is an omen of enlightenment, good fortune, and protection from forces that wish to do you harm. If you see a lizard while walking through your home or while outside in nature, it means that someone or something is protecting you from harm at that moment in time. Luck is on your side.

Sometimes the lizard comes as a warning that someone is hiding something, someone is not being honest with themselves or others, or someone is being devious. Lizards can be omens associated with deception and manipulation by others. If you have had a lizard animal omen then it could mean that someone close to you is trying to manipulate your emotions in order to get what they want out of life.

What Do Owls Symbolize?

Owl symbolism varies greatly throughout different cultures and belief systems. Most commonly, the owl symbolizes great wisdom, intuitive ability, and fortitude in one’s own self and being.

In western cultures, owls are often portrayed as the classic wise, old owl. Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, also held the owl as her sacred bird.[2]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Owl_of_Athena However, in other countries like Finland, owls are symbolic of a fool because of their wide-eyed appearance. For the Native Americans and other peoples, the owl is seen as a bad omen and unlucky messenger of death. [3]https://www.powwows.com/concerning-owls/ If you heard its call or see an owl, it usually meant that serious illness or death was on its way. For this reason, many get anxious when an owl crosses their path.

Owls also symbolize intelligence and sharp perception. With a connection the third eye and throat chakra centers, owl has the amazing ability to intuit anything (including secrets)and penetrate through illusion. An owl totem person can almost immediately sniff out dishonesty and insincere intentions in others. Similar to the High Priestess archetype in Tarot, the owl is tapped into a deep inner-knowing and can seemingly stare straight through to your soul. This can make others nervous or intimidated around people closely connected with owl. They are powerful and other people can sense this even without the owl person uttering a word.

What is the spiritual meaning of owls?

Spiritually, the owl helps us to navigate life with grace. Owl shows us how to take what is nourishing from a situation and leave the rest behind so we don’t internalize things that don’t support us. When an owl has eaten its prey, it begins to separate and compress the inedible parts (bones, claws, fur, teeth) into pellets, which the owl then coughs up and spits out.

Basically, owl teaches us to take the good, leave the bad – or, literally, expel it! Even though they are silent, owls are not passive birds. Whether it be habits, people, places, or things, owl medicine says to eradicate anything that doesn’t resonate with your soul. Spend time intuitively feeling what your truth is, what is important to you and what is not, and give voice to it.

The owl is a highly sensitive, deeply intuitive, and independent bird. With intuitive insight comes the ability to see + understand multiple perspectives – and not only does the owl know and see what others cannot – owl has a compulsion to reveal the truth it discovers. Unafraid to speak the truth even when it’s uncomfortable or hard to hear, owl spirit has an uncanny ability to see and speak right to the heart of a matter.

Detailed Owl Spiritual Meanings & Symbols

Are you feeling particularly drawn to owls? Do their special traits personally resonate with you? If so, you aren’t alone! Owl may be your totem or spirit animal, blessing you with it’s strengths and abilities. In the animal kingdom, the owl is a powerful, mysterious spirit guide with a unique set of skills. Here are some of owl spirit’s most impressive, inspiring qualities:

Wisdom

Wisdom is undoubtedly one of owl’s most popular and well-known traits. The reason the owl is dubbed one of the most intelligent and perceptive birds in the animal kingdom is because of owl’s independent behavior, incredible sense of sight, proficient hunting skills, and silent strength.

Unlike other birds of prey, the owl primarily hunts and lives alone, with a few exceptions. Aside from the purpose of mating, they will lodge with other owls to keep warm in cooler weather and scout out new hunting grounds. Outside of these purposes, owls are mostly solitary birds.

So if you find yourself resonating with the owl spirit animal, you are likely a very independent person. You may be somewhat introverted or reserved. While you enjoy the comfort and company of others, you probably prefer to spend most of your time by yourself. You may work or live on your own, and this is just how you like it! Your alone time is important to you and provides you with necessary time to reflect and recharge.

The owl spirit guide reminds you to listen to your inner guidance system, or intuition, above all else. This is where true universal wisdom lies. Owl knows that, at times, outside opinions and voices can muddy one’s clarity and perception; answers are within. Stillness, meditation, and intuitive insight are highly favored by the owl spirit animal.

Own Your Authenticity

The owl symbolizes the free thinker, the loner, and true mavericks of society. Eccentric and liberated, these birds often attract envy from others due to their unusual gifts. Owls can intuit, see, hear, and feel what others do not.

Because owls are so powerful, they are sometimes attacked by other birds who feel threatened by them. Known as mobbing, smaller birds will form a group and harass the owl. [4]https://nature-mentor.com/why-do-crows-attack-owls/ Despite the attacks, however, owls usually remain unscathed and simply depart from the area.

Owl’s lesson from this is that we should always strive to stick to our truth, ideas and dreams, even when others try to stifle us. Fiercely authentic and true to itself, the owl spirit animal reminds us to stay true to ourselves and be okay with standing out from the crowd. Even if others are skeptical or negative, owl says don’t let them ruffle your feathers!

Energy & Strength

Work smarter, not harder, is one of owl’s mottos. While most birds spend countless hours foraging resources and perfecting their nests from scratch, owls often skip out on this altogether! These birds of prey are actually known to take over nests that other birds have already built, such as old hawk or crow nests. Other owls will nest in hollow trees, in buildings (like barns), or in underground tunnels formed by burrowing animals. [5]https://www.almanac.com/nesting-season-owls

Once an owl has chosen its nest, you can trust that they will fiercely protect it, especially when raising young owlets. Owls are known to be extremely brave and territorial when it comes to their homes – they aren’t afraid to attack intruders, including humans and larger animals. [6]https://wildexplained.com/are-owls-dangerous/ When provoked, owls can be dangerous. Always keep a safe distance from owl nests, especially during mating season!

Reprioritize Yourself + Others

Sometimes, the owl spirit guide is a reminder to put those you love first. While owl is highly independent, relationships are still important! Whether it be your children, spouse, family members or friends, the owl calls for loyalty, protection, and quality time. Balance the energy you’re putting into yourself vs. others.

If an owl comes to you, it may be a sign that you need to set better boundaries with others in your life, or perhaps you need to prioritize your close relationships at this time. Owl wants you to take good care of not only yourself, but your loved ones as well. Have you been spending quality time with your partner, close friends, or family? How is your home life? Are you giving enough time to yourself as well?

It can be easy to get swept away in the busyness of life and lose sight of what’s actually important to us. Owl spirit asks you to get back to basics and make time for people/things that truly matter.

Insight

Out of the owl’s exceptional abilities, their sense of sight is by far the most powerful. In certain species, owl’s eyes can take up nearly 70% of their skulls (as opposed to 5% in humans). [7]https://www.owlpages.com/owls/articles.php?a=5

Many believe that owls can turn their head all the way around in a full 360 degrees, but this isn’t quite true. Owls can their head up to 270 degrees to look around. The reason they have to do this is because of their unique eye structure. Instead of spherical eyes, their eye shape is tubular – they can’t move their eyes, so instead, they must move their head to see about their surroundings. Don’t mistake this for poor eyesight, however. Owls can often see and spot prey from a mile away (literally). [8]https://lisbdnet.com/how-far-can-an-owl-see/#:~:text=org%20%E2%80%BA%20wiki%20%E2%80%BA%20Binocular_vision-,Binocular%20vision%20%E2%80%93%20Wikipedia,themselves%20without%20moving%20their%20body. With the ability to see in nearly every direction, the owl’s exceptional sight is one of the main reasons owls are regarded as a symbol of wisdom and intuition.

See Different Perspectives

The mark of true intelligence is the capability to see and understand a matter from different points of view. Owl spirit can see in nearly every direction, reminding you to keep your mind open to multiple perspectives – you never know what you may learn!

By taking a step back and allowing yourself to see from all sides of a matter, you stay open to learning and can cultivate a better understanding of the world and those around you.

See the Light in Darkness

Thriving in the darkness, owls are true nocturnal creatures. Objects in the dark appear up to 2.5 times brighter to owls than to humans. Because of this, they are able to safely and successfully hunt at night.

With the capacity to see the light in darkness, owl spirit is a messenger of hope. Where others feel scared or lost in the darkness, owl is perfectly at home and able to see the light. With owl, you are reminded to look for the light, even when all feels dark.

Unique Talents & Abilities

With over 200 species of owls present around the world (except for Antartica), owls have been able to adapt and evolve successfully due to fully utilizing all of their innate talents and abilities.

Owl spirit is a reminder that you are also born with unique gifts. Maybe you are especially artistic, a patient listener, or have a flair for mathematics. Whatever your talents are, owl encourages you to actively develop them.

Get to know your natural aptitudes; understand what you want and do what works for you. Take the time to refine your abilities, and don’t underestimate yourself or sell yourself short! With the owl, you are being called on to realize your gifts and fully step into your power. Put in the necessary time, practice, and dedication towards honing your skills.

Listen Closely

Aside from impressively strong eyesight, owls also have a highly developed sense of hearing.[9]https://www.owlpages.com/owls/articles.php?a=6 At certain frequencies, an owl can hear 10 times better than we can!

Owls start hearing before they even hatch from their eggs, and they often maintain this sharp hearing throughout their entire life. Some species are born with asymmetrical ears, enabling them to differentiate and locate multiple sounds at once. When an owl cannot see it’s prey, it will begin to listen closely and rely on its hearing to hunt. Even when prey is hidden underneath soil or snow, an owl has the uncanny ability to hear + pinpoint it.

When the owl spirit animal comes to you, it is time to tune into your observant listening skills, as well as your deep intuition. Owl says things aren’t always as they seem, there is more than the eye can see – look past surface appearances and listen to what is really going on.

Stealth & Silence

Another unique attribute of the owl is their stealth and ability to move in silence. With large wings made of specially fringed feathers, their flight is almost completely silent.[10]https://www.audubon.org/news/the-silent-flight-owls-explained Unlike other birds, owls don’t have to constantly flap their wings in order to stay in the air; their wings carry them long distances with little exertion and turbulence. They can even ascend vertically at a moment’s notice in order to protect themselves or their nest.

The grace and ease of owl spirit tells us to go with the flow, rest above the fray, and protect our privacy. The owl is very private and knows when to make a commotion and when to stay silent. This can be a reminder to avoid over-sharing and watch out for dominating conversation with others. Sometimes, the owl says that it’s better to stay reserved, listen, and stand back + watch.

Learn to Fly

Even with such dynamic flight capability, owls are not born like this. Owls actually learn and practice how to fly from the time they are just an owlet. When first training for flight, they literally take a leap of faith from their nest to start. From there, they continually practice flying until they get the hang of it. Eventually, they become exceedingly strong and skilled fliers.

With the owl, you are encouraged to take a leap of faith from your proverbial nest and go after what you want. Don’t be afraid to fail, try, and try again. Owl spirit teaches us that to reach success, we must put forth continual practice and devotion.

The Owl Totem & Owl Spirit Animal Explained

All living beings are interconnected.

Native Americans refer to this connection as “Wakan and Wakan Tanka“. They believe that every being has its own spirit, or “Wakan“, while also sharing the same spiritual essence, or “Wakan Tanka“. [11]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wakan_Tanka

Because of our connection to all life, when we need help, our own soul sends out energetic signals to the animal kingdom. When our spirit animals hear this, they come to us to offer their medicine, protection, and wisdom. Contrary to popular belief, we don’t select our spirit animals – they choose and come to us. Spirit animals act as protective guardians and guides for us throughout life, and can even impart talents and gifts.

Similarly, animal totems are animals whose energy we strongly associate with – it speaks to your spirit. While your spirit animal will probably change throughout life, a totem animal is believed to stay with a person or family for life.

If you’ve felt a deep affinity for owls in your life, or if owls have really caught your interest lately, you are feeling the pull of the owl spirit animal (or owl may be your totem animal). If an owl makes itself known to you, whether in person or through media such as art or T.V., pay close attention! It isn’t just a coincidence – owl is calling you.

Owl Totem

With owl as your totem animal, you are strongly connected to Yin (or divine feminine) energy. Just as owl can navigate through the dark, when others lose their way, you are able to see clearly and can intuitively sense things other people cannot. You have the ability to discern with wisdom and guide yourself (and others) through confusing, difficult times.

With owl as your totem, you have mastered the art of silence and listen more than you speak. When you do speak, however, it is packed with purpose and meaning. Your words carry weight and impact those around you. You have a sharp wit and the ability to cut through to the heart of things.

As an owl totem, you naturally work well in the darkness and can see things from multiple points of view. For a holistic balance, is recommended to also work with the Mouse power animal, the major food source for owl. Mouse is opposite, yet similar, to the owl and can help temper owl’s intense abilities and gifts.

Owl Spirit Animal

If owl is your spirit animal, you are likely in a period of life where you are tapping into your keen psychic senses and intuitive abilities. Owl calls to you as a spirit animal when you find yourself in the dark, as the owl can see clearly through the night and perceive things that others cannot. The owl is grounded and guided by all its senses, including intuition.

Spirit animal owl encourages you to be wise and pay attention – there is currently more than meets the eye. Clarity and knowledge will come as you take the time to sit and process all that you are sensing at this time. With owl, you may be feeling particularly sensitive to the energies around you. If you ever find that it becomes overwhelming, the owl spirit says to retreat to the safety of your “nest” and take some time to ground yourself, regroup and clear your energy field.

Owls in Dreams

Owls in dreams symbolize the need to follow your intuitive compass, tap into your hidden gifts, and release anything that is no longer serving your highest good.

Spiritually, dreaming of owls can represent change, death, and purification. You may be going through a significant transition or transformation in your waking life. Whether it be people, places, things or behaviors, owl spirit in a dream asks you to carefully evaluate your life and get rid of anything that is holding you back or bringing you down.

If you dream of an owl, you may be feeling lost or ungrounded in your life, or perhaps you are going through a classic “dark night of the soul”. But just as owl safely guides itself through the shadows of the night, you are being encouraged to have faith, keep moving forward, and look for the light. Your intuition is speaking to you now and trying to guide you in the right direction. Owl reminds you to listen to this inner guidance system of yours, for much knowledge and help is available to you at this time. Take some time to meditate or clear your mind, and tune into your intuitive instincts more.

When an owl appears in your dream, take note of the emotions you felt or thoughts you had in the dream – this can give you clues to what exactly owl is attempting to offer guidance about. For example, suppose you dream of an owl and feel fear or anxiety. In that case, this usually means that you are suppressing yourself in your waking life or avoiding important situations that must be addressed. The owl coming to you in your dreams can be a wake-up call that you need to deepen your awareness and use more discretion in your life. Dreaming of an owl can be a sign that change or a challenging situation is imminent (especially if you dream of a dead owl).

Owl as an Omen

As an omen, owl comes to you as a messenger of either a blessing or a warning. Depending of what you’re currently going through in your life, the meaning of an owl omen can differ. As always, it’s important to listen to your intuition will help you in order to discover more about what owl is trying to tell you.

Generally, the meaning of an owl omen is positive. It can be a sign of encouragement that your intuitive awareness and skills are growing. You may be currently in a period of purging things that no longer serve you; owl is an omen of congratulations and support. When we stand in our truth and inner power, owl spirit rejoices.

Alternatively, owl can be an omen of imminent change, death, or transition in life. This isn’t necessarily bad, however! When owl lets you know that transformation is ahead, it is also a message of hope. You are fully capable and have the strength to make it through this time of your life. With owl, you are learning how to stay in your power even when outside circumstances may test you. You are entering into a fresh, new beginning in life.
